REGENPAT, consumer potato production in Álava under regenerative management

Agricultural land is the most important asset for farmers and livestock farmers, both because of its ecosystem value as a CO2 sink and because it is the basis of the productive potential of crops. Regenerative agriculture appears as the closest management alternative to improve soil health. Regenerative agriculture is clear about the final objective to be achieved, but they are not agreed, nor are there recognized standards, of the itinerary to achieve it; regenerative agriculture is a holistic treatment, without specific definition, appropriate to the site and to the crops in rotation. Currently, there is no regulation or certification that supports it, nor even technical consensus on what types of management are “regenerative”. The challenge of this project is, on the one hand, to define quantifiable indicators that demonstrate this soil regeneration, determine a regenerative management for the production of consumer potato in Álava and carry it out in a pilot, see if that potato meets the standards of UDAPA and finally, if there is an interest among consumers of Basque liners.

In Europe, certifiable agricultural management regulations are only possible for organic farming (under European standards) and integrated farming, under regionally adapted technical standards. It is therefore necessary to define the agricultural systems by means of measurable and objectifiable parameters and, in addition, to clearly demonstrate their environmental and social benefit, of course, that they maintain the premises of economic profitability of agricultural holdings. This need is addressed by the project REGENPAT.El main objective of the project that has the collaboration of LURSARE, UDAPA, EROSKI and NEIKER, It is to define quantifiable indicators that demonstrate the regeneration of the soil of the crop under the general premises of regenerative agriculture for the production of potato for consumption in Álava.
