ELIKA-PEF, calculation, information and verification of the environmental footprint of food products

The ELIKA-PEF project has finished in March 2019 reaching the expected results. The main result of the project is the development of an advanced tool to facilitate the collection of environmental information from food product suppliers as well as a management tool for such information for the calculation of the product environmental footprint (PEF).

The project led by EROSKI has counted on the participation of leading entities in the field such as AZTI and INGENET. In addition, two small local companies in the Basque Country in the bottled water sector, BALENZATEGUI, and in the wine sector, ERREKALDE, have participated in the project by validating the tool and providing their environmental inventory information for the calculation of the PAH of the water ALZOLA and the txakoli HIRUZTA, respectively.

The environmental footprints of ALZOLA and HIRUZTA are also part of the results of the project, which also includes a guide of best available techniques in the bottled water and wine sectors. In this way, it seeks to advance in the Basque food sector, especially for Small and Medium Enterprises, towards a more sustainable production model and a more transparent environmental communication.
Within the project, surveys and face-to-face meetings with consumers have also been carried out to evaluate the degree of knowledge of the existing environmental labeling and validate a model of communication of the environmental footprints of the product that allows presenting the environmental information in a clear and simple way, thus promoting responsible consumption.
