ENVIROSCORE, a system for communicating environmental impact

Eroski has led the ENVIROSCORE project which was developed in 2022. In the same, EUSKABER (a poultry cooperative), ARROYABE (a preserves company), S.A.T. KARRANTZA, and GRUPO TGT (production and packaging of milk) participated; the AZTI Technology Center was also there for execution.
This project seeks to validate the use of the environmental impact communication system, ENVIROSCORE ABCDE, as a tool to bring about change in the production and consumption of food towards models that are more respectful to the environment.
In the project, the following actions will be carried out:
- Life cycle analysis (LCA) in three types of differentiated food products (dairy, eggs, and fish preserves)
- Transcribing the LCA results onto the ENVIROSCORE scale.
- Creating an ENVIROSCORE label with the corresponding letter. Application on the shelf or on the product packaging, following the guidelines regarding the use of the logo.
- Evaluation of the consumers’ understanding and acceptance
- Comparison of the scores of selected products with other products in the same category
- Generation of scenarios for technical improvement along the value chain that allow for the selected products’ ENVIROSCORE to improve, which would mean a competitive advantage for the selected products.
- Development of a system to promote and publicize the ENVIROSCORE as a way to foment responsible consumption among Basque consumers.
