The ELIKA-PEF project ended in March 2019 and had the expected results. The project’s main result is the development of an advanced tool to facilitate gathering environmental information from food product suppliers as well as a management tool to use this information to calculate the product’s environmental impact (PEI).
In the project, led by EROSKI, leading organizations in the matter, such as AZTI and INGENET, have taken part. Moreover, two small, local companies in the Basque Country, BALENZATEGUI, in the bottled water sector, and ERREKALDE, in the wine sector, have participated in the project, validating the tool and providing their environmental inventory information to calculate the PEI of ALZOLA water and HIRUZTA txakoli wine, respectively.
The environmental footprints of ALZOLA and HIRUZTA are also part of the project’s results, which also includes a best practices guide available in the bottled water and wine sectors. Through this, advancement is sought in the Basque food sector, especially in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, towards a more sustainable production model and more transparent environmental communication. Within the project, surveys and in-person meetings with consumers were also carried out in order to evaluate the degree of knowledge regarding existing environmental labeling and to validate the product environmental footprint communication model that allows for environmental information to be presented clearly and simply, thereby fomenting responsible consumption.
